He began his studies in 1973 at Parnaso with Professor Hélia Soveral and Professor Correia de Oliveira and in 1974 he started to have regular classes with Professor Helena Sá e Costa, with whom he studied for 10 years.

He completed the Performing Diploma in Music at the Conservatory of Music of Porto, in the class of Professor Fernando Jorge Azevedo.

In 1983 he went to the United States of America to study with Professors Sequeira Costa, Léon Fleisher and Dmitri Paperno.
​
