Pedro Burmester

He was born in Porto in 1963. He gave his first recital at the age of 10, having since performed as a soloist, in chamber music and with orchestra in several renowned venues, such as the Grande Auditorio da Fundação Gulbenkian, Sala Suggia da Casa da Música, Coliseums of Porto and Lisbon, Kölner Philharmonie (Cologne), Usina del Arte (Argentina), Sydney Opera House (Australia), Brucknerhaus (Austria), Théâtre de la Monnaie and Concertgebouw Brugge (Belgium), Sala Cecília Meireles do Rio de Janeiro, Sala S. Paulo and Auditorium Claúdio Santoro (Brazil), Beijing Concert Hall (China), Auditorium Nacional de Madrid (Spain). Tivoli Concert Hall (Denmark), 92nd Street Y and Kennedy Center (USA), Salle Gaveau and Salle Pleyel (France), Concertgebouw (Netherlands), Wigmore Hall (England), Teatro Ghione (Italy), Teatro Solis (Uruguay), among many others. He was a student of Helena Costa for 10 years. He continued his studies in the United States with Sequeira Costa, Leon Fleisher and Dmitri Paperno. He participated in masterclasses with Jörg Demus, Aldo Ciccolini, Karl Engel, Moura Castro, Eric Heidsieck, Lev Vlasenco, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Peter Lang, Tatjana Nikolaiewa and Elisabeth Leonskaja. He received a scholarship from the Austrian Ministry of Culture and attended the Salzburg Summer Academy for 10 consecutive years. In 1983, Pedro Burmester won the 2nd Vianna da Motta prize and, in 1989, he received the special jury prize at the Van Cliburn competition, in the United States. He was a soloist with practically all Portuguese Orchestras and several International Orchestras, such as the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, Orchester Phillarmonique de Liège, London Symphony Orchestra, Orquestra Sinfónica Teatro Nacional Cláudio Santoro, Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. He shared the stage with 65 national and international conductors, such as Frans Bruggen, Jan Latham-Koenig, Lothar Zagrosek, Michael Zilm, Paavo Järvi, Sir Georg Solti, Joana Carneiro, Isaac Karabtchevsky, Leopold Hager, Peter Rundel and Baldur Brönnimann. Trained as a chamber musician, Pedro Burmester performs regularly with pianist Mário Laginha, and has collaborated with other musicians such as Anner Bylsma, António Saiote, Gerardo Ribeiro, Paulo Gaio Lima, Jed Barahal, Thomas Zehetmair, Augustin Dumay, David Geringas, Misha Maisky . He recorded his first album in 1987 with works by Schumann and Schubert (EMI Edition) and, since then, he has released several solo albums, with orchestra and chamber music, in a total of 18 recordings. In 1990, he was awarded the Degree of Knight of the Order of Santiago de Espada, by President Mário Soares and in 2006 President Jorge Sampaio decorated him with the Degree of Commander of the Order of Infante D. Henrique. In 1999, challenged by the then minister of culture, Manuel Maria Carrilho and Artur Santos Silva, he developed the Casa da Música Project. Initially as a member of the Installation Committee and Executive Committee of Sociedade Porto 2001 and later as Artistic and Education Director of Casa da Música. He was responsible for defining and organizing the Resident Structures (Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música, Remix Ensemble, Orquestra Barroca, Ópera Studio, Educational Service), the programming strategy, the programming and production budget, and the partnership and welcome from the Casa da Música Foundation. Ten years later, Pedro Burmester returned to his artistic and teaching activity, currently teaching the Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Piano and Chamber Music at the Escola Superior de Artes do Espetáculo in Porto, in addition to various Masterclasses training young pianists.
